This piece of news is simply delightful ! Veteran Indian film director, Shyam Benegal will now direct a movie revolving around the Buddha and Buddhism. The project is a joint venture between Colombo (Sri Lanka) based Light of Asia Foundation and India’s Beyond Dreams Entertainment. The cast of the film is not yet decided but it is scheduled to be released around mid 2009.
For me and all those interested in watching a movie around the Buddha, this is going to be a definite watch out one. More so because such a respected name of Indian cinema is going to direct the movie. With Shyam Benegal around, one can expect a movie which is well made and maintains the dignity of the great soul and his teachings.
It is quiet often seen that these kinds of movie do pretty well abroad but not in India. In India, it is only the a particular segment that watches such movies. A majority of the rest know very little about the movie. I really hope that this movie is promoted well in India and doesn’t remain confined to the niche audience only. It should reach the masses and make them aware of the life and teachings of the Buddha. After all, India is the land where Buddhism originated.
Waiting for the movie to be made and released. For now, you can check out the news piece here

Sounds good, is this the same movie that Thich Nhat Hanh and The Dalai Lama had a hand in announcing?
I look forward to seeing it when it comes out?
Good to meet you on The Buddha Diaries! Thanks for checking in. I'll keep watching your blog. Is this your first? Where are you? This film sounds like something to look forward to... Blessings, PeterAtLarge
